Marathon Oil Tower Lobby

LOCATION: Houston, TX    |   SIZE: 30,000 s.f.

WHAT: Marathon Oil Tower is a 41-story, Class A+ office building containing over 1,000,000 square feet of premier office space. We needed to relocate an under-performing coffee kiosk, update a the original security elevator entrance and reinvent an existing planter box.

PROBLEM: The project covered over 10,000 s.f. of mezzanine and lobby space. We created a modern café in the mezzanine area to excite the sense of smell for the morning tenant coming into the building. The challenge of a high ceiling was solved with square floating fabric clouds that reduced the scale of the ceiling over the coffee shop. Adjacent to the café, a media rest stop was created to keep tenants and visitors up to date with the latest international news. The existing planter box was transformed into an interaction of light and water. Using the large bar skylights, light boxes transfer daylight down into a new water element composed of clear tubs of water that create a pillar of water. This water and light element, along with a modern planting scheme created a harmonious element in one of the most iconic buildings in Houston, Texas.

The security lobby was recreated with the use of modern materials to create an elegant but intimidating security desk. Above the escalator a modern art mobile greats visitor and business VIP’s as they move from the 1st floor to the mezzanine area.

SOLUTION: Due to the recession of 2008 the project was put on indefinite hold. Transwestern hopes to update the lobby soon.

**This project was completed while the principals of walkermiranda were at previous firms.
